Because of its compressed height and generous ride height, the 9055 is the version we have most commonly encountered and used. This does not mean it is correct for every installation, so the original part number and mounting arrangement should still be checked.

The Firestone 9931 is supplied without its lower piston. The correct application-specific piston must already be present on the vehicle or purchased separately.

Identifying the Correct Air Spring

The best method is to check the complete Firestone number on the original air spring. Where possible, the correct replacement should also be confirmed with the manufacturer of the suspension kit.

We appreciate that this is not always possible. Many air-suspension manufacturers, installers and vehicle converters have ceased trading, changed ownership or no longer support older systems.

Ideally, you need the actual part number. Unfortunately, this is only printed on a yellow paper label on the top of the bag. It is not permanently marked on the bellows, top cap or bottom cap. After years or decades in service, the label may have deteriorated or disappeared completely, making positive identification difficult.

Do not identify the required air spring from its appearance alone. The 9047, 9055 and 9931 can look almost identical, especially when viewed from above.

Measuring an Existing Installation

It is almost impossible for an installer to measure the true ride height of a loose air spring on a workbench. Even its extended height can be difficult to reproduce accurately because the shape and length of a sleeve air spring change according to pressure, load and lower-piston position.

Where the original number cannot be found, begin by measuring the installation:

• Measure the normal installed distance between the air-spring mounting points.
• Measure the approximate maximum distance at full suspension extension.
• Measure the approximate minimum distance at full suspension compression.
• Check the upper mounting centres.
• Check the upper and lower mounting threads.
• Check the airline connection.
• Check whether the bag has an integral lower mounting or uses a separate piston.

These measurements will not conclusively identify the correct air spring. They can, however, provide a useful first check that a proposed replacement will not be overextended or overcompressed during suspension movement.
