Air suspension systems enhance ride comfort and vehicle adaptability but face challenges in extreme temperatures. In cold weather, moisture can freeze within the system, causing blockages in airlines, valves, and fittings. To prevent this, it's essential to drain the air tank regularly, use airbrake antifreeze, and install water traps or air dryers to remove moisture. Additionally, rubber components like air bags become less elastic in low temperatures, increasing the risk of cracks or brittleness.     • Drain the Air Tank Regularly: Water accumulates in the tank over time. Draining it monthly - or more often in humid climates - prevents water buildup that could freeze.
    • Add Airbrake Antifreeze: Specifically designed for pneumatic systems, airbrake antifreeze can be added to the airlines to prevent freezing in extreme conditions. This is especially important if your vehicle is used in subzero climates.
    • Install a Water Trap, Dryer, or Cooling Coil: Water traps capture condensation before it enters the airlines, while air dryers actively remove moisture. Cooling coils can also help by condensing and collecting water vapor before it freezes. These are effective upgrades to ensure a dry air supply year-round.

2. Reduced Elasticity of Rubber Components

At low temperatures, rubber becomes less elastic, which can impact the flexibility and performance of air bags.

  • Use Branded, Subzero-Rated Air Bags: Most high-quality branded air bags are rated for temperatures between -30° C and 70° C, making them suitable for year-round use. Choose air bags with these ratings to ensure durability in freezing conditions.
  • Inspect Regularly for Damage: Check for cracks, hardening, or brittleness in the air bags and hoses. Catching issues early can save you from unexpected failures in extreme weather.

We have a new video showing a very complex air installation on the Humberside Fire and Rescue icar. This vehicle is used to educate young drivers and features multiple controllers including a custom built computer, along with multiple air sources including Fire Brigade BA cylinders for maximum play time and a nice simple ICE install. The install takes up all of the boot and is an example of the most sophisticated end of the scale for air suspension.

New Air Bag stock

After struggling over the past few months to keep bags in stock due to high demand we now have pallets of bags on the shelf for around 90% of all bags we supply. These can be purchased via the shop but if you need advice please feel free to email office@airride.co.uk.

Every day we are asked to supply replacement bags for vehicles due to airbag failure (usually after 5-15 years in service). If you need replacement air bags then please measure the bag, and send some digital pictures of the bag (still on the vehicle if necessary), in the first instance. From this we should be able to advise as you should note part numbers are almost entirely useless and we generally supply only current technology for bags.

For replacement of worn out or damaged airbags it is essential for safety reasons to replace them in pairs. This is true of metal springs true but doubly so for airbags as technology has moved on considerably over the past few years with spring rates appropriate for vehicles being used.

Airbag Selection added to Shop to buy

We have just finished adding the bulk of our commonly used airbags (also called air springs or air bags or rubber bellows) to our shop where they can be purchased. These are at the heart of any air suspension conversion. The Airbag supports the weight of the vehicle and is responsible for the great ride and the ability to lift or drop the vehicle.
Almost every day I am approached by someone wanting to replace a worn out airbag. Usual life expectancy is probably greater than a metal coil or leaf spring at about 5-10 years with negligible deterioration is ride quality – its the air that supports the vehicle and not the rubber! Metal springs are softer after only a few years.

If you are replacing an existing spring then our end caps are aluminium to resist rust, and have multiple fittings to assist if you are upgrading from Firestone, Dunlop or other old style airbags. Please email pictures and dimensions if you need advice – its rarely as simple as a part number when replacing airbags.
