AIR SUSPENSION

A Guide to Air Suspension

for Motorhomes, Campers and Vans

Why Is Air Suspension Worth Considering?

If you’re a camper or motorhome owner, you know that the journey can often be as important as the destination. Whether you’re navigating scenic back roads, cruising along motorways, or venturing into remote locations, having the right suspension system makes all the difference. Enter AirRide Air Suspension—a game-changing upgrade that enhances your vehicle’s handling, comfort, and overall performance.

Who Is AirRide?

AirRide is a leading UK-based company that has been manufacturing premium pneumatic suspension kits for over 24 years. Specializing in motorhome and van suspension, AirRide’s kits are compatible with leading brands like Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Ford, Mercedes, MAN, Opel, VW, Vauxhall, Iveco, and Renault. Designed with precision and built with quality components, AirRide systems offer tailored solutions to meet the needs of thousands of satisfied customers.

How Does Air Suspension Work?

At its core, AirRide suspension systems utilize two air bags (also called air springs) installed between the chassis and axle. These airbags complement the vehicle’s existing suspension, replacing traditional bump stops to deliver a smoother and more controlled ride.
Key benefits include:

  • Improved stability: Maintain control in crosswinds or when overtaking/being overtaken by heavy vehicles.
  • Reduced body roll: Experience a noticeable difference when cornering, entering roundabouts, or manoeuvring through tight spaces.
  • Enhanced road handling: Enjoy a vehicle that feels more predictable and responsive, no matter the driving conditions.

Why Upgrade to Air Suspension?

AirRide systems aren’t just about comfort—they’re about transforming your driving experience.

  • Superior Ride Quality: Feel the difference on motorways, rural roads, and unpaved tracks. The air springs absorb shocks and vibrations, smoothing out bumps for a more pleasant ride.
  • Enhanced Safety: By reducing body roll and stabilizing the vehicle, AirRide decreases driver fatigue, helping you stay more alert on long journeys.
  • Savings Over Time: Less wear on your tyres, brakes, and suspension components, plus improved fuel efficiency, means AirRide pays for itself over time.
  • Passenger Comfort: No more jolts and bounces—passengers can relax and enjoy the scenery, even on uneven roads.

Perfect for All Situations

AirRide systems are especially valuable for motorhome owners facing unique challenges like:

  • Ground Clearance Issues: Avoid grounding out on steep driveways, ferry ramps, and uneven surfaces.
  • Uneven Load Distribution: Adjust air pressure to maintain a level ride height, even with heavy or unevenly distributed loads.
  • Changing Conditions: Whether it’s a different driver, shifting weather, or varied road conditions, AirRide adapts with ease.

With adjustable air pressure, you can tailor the suspension to suit your preferences, driving style, and road conditions. It’s flexibility and control, right at your fingertips.

Choose the Right System for You

AirRide offers a range of systems to cater to different needs and budgets:

Contacted AirRide for a price for new front struts

Contacted AirRide for a price for new front struts as one is leaking, Kristine suggested I try a new set if O rings first which I ordered from stock. These have cured the problem For only £15 rather than £800 for the struts. Also followed up the order With a useful fitting guide pdf. Great service all round

RUBY

Extremely helpful from start to finish.

Extremely helpful from start to finish. We needed an emergency part for our motorhome whilst on holiday. Kristine sorted the part out and sent it to site reception. We can now travel home safely. Highly recommend 😄

MARTIN COOK

Service Above and Beyond.

Contacted AirRide for advice as to approach fixing the faulty air suspension on what was a VW Caddy formerly converted for wheelchair compatibility I.e. pneumatic ramp and rear air suspension to lower the back for the ramp entry. They went above and beyond, asking for, and reviewing photographs to analyze potential solutions that would also align with different budgets and such. One doesn’t experience this type of brilliant service and assistance very often and this level of care gives great confidence to customers trying to arrive at solutions in the quite technical world air suspension. Big thanks!

MARTIN HALLIDAY

Semi Air suspension.

Had rear air suspension fitted on my Motorhome. Airide did a fantastic job, everything works and looks great. Would highly recommend using them, very professional.

CLAIRE HALL

The bespoke product and personalized…

The bespoke product and personalized service provided by AirRide was second to none and have ensured that we now have a smooth ride in our converted Doblo. The only thing that was a bit of a let down was not having the ability to track our parcel, as it meant we missed the delivery of the airbag suspension and then had to organise a new delivery slot which meant delaying have the product fitted. Other than that I would whole heartedly recommend using Air Ride for any suspension system.

A.SELWAY

My Soggy Motorhome

My motorhome, a Swift Sundance 600s dating from 2004, had rear suspension leaf springs that were actually inverted - that is to say bent downwards at each end. This was no doubt due to 18 years of continuous load. Leaf springs are supposed to go on holiday occasionally, having the load removed so that they recover their shape. The consequence of having sagging leaf springs like this is excessive roll on cornering and a back end that occasionally impacts on the road when going over a rough piece of road, like a railway crossing, for example. Not to mention a continuous rough ride shaking the back, rattling the pots and pans and even your teeth filling at times. So Air Ride seemed to be the answer. Take out the bump stops and bolt them in. Would it be that simple? Would it cure the problems?

Yes, and yes. Removing the bump stops was, surprisingly, dead simple. They were not at all rusty and unscrewed easily. I took off the back wheels to get access, which is much better than rolling about on the ground underneath. Then pop in the bellows, secure them, put the wheel back on and Robert is your father's brother. All that remains to be done is the compressed air pipework. I had opted not to have fancy on board pump, gauges and electrical wiring, just two Schrader valves on a bracket which I positioned out of the way in the gas compartment.

To start with I put in 80psi which was too much. The back end was kicked up maybe 3" higher than before and it looked ridiculous! Eventually I dropped it down to 30 psi and it looked right. I've now driven the vehicle about 1000 miles since fitting (which is why this revue is so late) and I am delighted with the improvement. The leaf springs are smiling too! Body roll is almost eliminated, the ride is smoother and quieter and no more risk of grounding going over rough roads and tracks.

This is a fantastic product, I couldn't be more pleased with it. Five stars Air Ride, you deserve them.
